The European-American history started when Sieur d'Iberville, a French explorer was leading an exploration party up the Mississippi River. They referred to location and the pole "le b√Ęton rouge," which translates to "the red stick."
The location had been named "Istrouma" by the local Native Americans. Proof has been located along the Amite, Comite and Mississippi rivers and in 3 Native American mounds which remain in the city. Archaeologists have been able to determine indigenous habitation of the region to 8000 BC. These mounds were built in the Middle Archaic period by gatherer-hunter societies perhaps as early as 4500 BC that is long before the construction of Egyptian pyramids.
